Job Description

The Axis Max Life Graduate Engineer Trainee role is an entry-level opportunity for fresh graduates who want to establish a career in software engineering and modern enterprise technology. Based in Gurugram and aligned with the Digital Technology function, this position gives candidates an opportunity to contribute to the development, testing, and delivery of scalable software solutions across web applications, APIs, and data platforms. Trainees will work under the guidance of senior engineers, technical leads, solution architects, and engineering managers while developing practical knowledge of software development practices. The role is particularly suited to candidates with a strong foundation in programming and object-oriented concepts who are interested in building reliable applications and exploring modern technologies used in large enterprise environments.

As part of the engineering team, the Graduate Engineer Trainee will gain exposure to several areas of the software development lifecycle, including application development, unit testing, debugging, technical documentation, version control, and continuous integration and delivery. Candidates will be expected to write clean and maintainable code, participate in code reviews, assist with troubleshooting, and contribute to small proof-of-concepts or technology experiments. The position also provides opportunities to learn about databases, application and data integration, cloud platforms, containers, DevOps practices, and backend technologies. Depending on project requirements, trainees may encounter technologies such as AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, Docker, Node.js, React, Angular, Vue, and CI/CD tools, making the role valuable for graduates seeking broad exposure to modern software engineering.

The position also emphasizes continuous learning, collaboration, and problem-solving, which are important qualities for beginning a successful technology career. Candidates will work alongside development, QA, DevOps, and architecture teams and will receive mentoring while becoming familiar with enterprise application engineering practices. Exposure to emerging areas such as Generative AI and other new technologies can further help trainees understand how modern organizations are evolving their technology ecosystems. With opportunities to work on real engineering activities, participate in learning initiatives, and understand scalable software development practices, this role can provide a strong foundation for future positions such as Software Engineer, Backend Developer, Full Stack Developer, Cloud Engineer, DevOps Engineer, Application Developer, or other enterprise technology roles.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Support software development: Assist senior engineers in developing and enhancing software applications, APIs, and platform components while following project requirements and established engineering practices.
  • Write maintainable code: Develop clean, readable, and structured code under guidance, applying programming fundamentals, object-oriented principles, coding standards, and appropriate design practices.
  • Participate in unit testing: Create or support unit tests for assigned components, verify application behavior, identify issues, and work with experienced team members to improve software quality.
  • Debug technical issues: Assist in investigating application errors and unexpected behavior, understand possible causes, and contribute to resolving technical issues with appropriate mentoring.
  • Build proof-of-concepts: Support small prototypes, proof-of-concepts, and technology experiments designed to evaluate new approaches, frameworks, tools, or emerging technologies.
  • Work with engineering teams: Collaborate with developers, QA professionals, DevOps engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to understand requirements and contribute effectively to project activities.
  • Learn cloud technologies: Gain practical exposure to cloud platforms and cloud-native development concepts while supporting applications or engineering activities that use modern infrastructure.
  • Contribute to DevOps practices: Assist with version control, CI/CD activities, build processes, deployment-related tasks, and other engineering workflows used to deliver software efficiently.
  • Maintain technical documentation: Contribute to project documentation, technical notes, development records, and other materials that help teams understand applications and engineering processes.
  • Participate in code reviews: Take part in code review and knowledge-sharing activities, learn from feedback provided by senior engineers, and continuously improve coding quality and technical understanding.
  • Explore modern technologies: Develop awareness of technologies such as containers, serverless computing, backend frameworks, frontend frameworks, and Generative AI as part of continuous technical learning.
  • Support continuous improvement: Identify opportunities to improve technical processes, learn new development approaches, and actively participate in training, mentoring, and knowledge-sharing sessions.

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Educational qualification: Candidates should hold a B.E., B.Tech, MCA, or MSc-IT qualification. A strong academic foundation in computer science, information technology, software engineering, or a related discipline is beneficial.
  • Experience requirement: The opportunity is intended for fresh graduates or candidates with up to one year of experience, including relevant internships and practical academic exposure.
  • Programming fundamentals: Candidates should have a sound understanding of programming fundamentals and preferably possess knowledge of Java or another object-oriented programming language.
  • OOPS concepts: A strong understanding of object-oriented programming concepts such as classes, objects, inheritance, polymorphism, abstraction, and encapsulation will help candidates develop maintainable enterprise applications.
  • Data structures and problem-solving: Candidates should understand basic data structures and demonstrate the ability to approach programming and technical problems logically and systematically.
  • Database knowledge: Familiarity with relational and non-relational databases, including basic SQL and NoSQL concepts, is desirable for working with data-driven applications and enterprise platforms.
  • SDLC understanding: Candidates should have a basic understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle, including development, testing, debugging, deployment, maintenance, and collaboration between different technology teams.
  • Cloud and container awareness: Knowledge of or academic exposure to AWS, Azure, GCP, Docker, containers, or serverless technologies will be an advantage, although these are listed as good-to-have skills rather than core requirements.
  • Development and DevOps exposure: Familiarity with technologies such as Node.js, React, Angular, Vue, Git, CI/CD, or DevOps practices through coursework, projects, internships, or hackathons can strengthen a candidate's profile.
  • Learning and collaboration skills: Candidates should demonstrate curiosity, adaptability, communication skills, teamwork, and a willingness to learn new technologies. Interest in Generative AI, emerging technologies, and enterprise software engineering is also desirable.
