athenahealth is hiring an Associate Member of Technical Staff (AMTS) – Backend Engineer to join its Productivity Solutions Zone, where engineering innovation supports scalable healthcare technology solutions. In this role, you will design and develop RESTful APIs and microservices using Node.js and Express while working with modern databases such as MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Redis, and DynamoDB. You will help build scalable backend services, optimize data models, implement caching and asynchronous workflows, and support reliable production operations using AWS technologies. The role emphasizes engineering excellence, security, observability, and performance, providing opportunities to work with modern backend architecture patterns, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud-native development practices.

Roles & Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs and microservices using Node.js and Express to support scalable workflow automation solutions.
- Implement caching, background jobs, queues, and workflow state management using Redis to improve performance and responsiveness.
- Model, manage, and optimize data across MongoDB, PostgreSQL, and DynamoDB based on application requirements and access patterns.
- Build secure, reliable, and high-performing backend services while following software engineering best practices and coding standards.
- Participate in unit testing, integration testing, code reviews, and CI/CD processes to ensure code quality and smooth deployments.
- Implement observability practices through logging, metrics, monitoring, and tracing to support production reliability.
- Apply security fundamentals such as authentication, authorization, secrets management, and least-privilege access controls.
- Support deployment and operations using AWS services such as IAM, CloudWatch, API Gateway, VPC, and container platforms.
- Collaborate with product and cross-functional teams to translate business workflows into scalable technical solutions.
- Contribute to technical documentation, runbooks, debugging efforts, and continuous improvement of engineering processes.
Requirements & Eligibility:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field with 6 months to 2 years of relevant experience.
- Strong proficiency in JavaScript or TypeScript with hands-on experience in Node.js and Express backend development.
- Practical experience with Redis for caching, pub/sub, queues, and performance optimization.
- Hands-on knowledge of MongoDB including CRUD operations, indexing, schema design, and aggregation pipelines.
- Familiarity with DynamoDB concepts such as partition keys, GSIs/LSIs, throughput models, and scalable access patterns.
- Solid understanding of REST API design principles including versioning, pagination, idempotency, and error handling.
- Basic knowledge of AWS services, cloud infrastructure, IAM, networking, and logging/monitoring concepts.
- Experience with Git, CI/CD tools, and testing frameworks such as Jest or Mocha.
- Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills with a focus on reliability and performance.
- Exposure to event-driven architectures, message brokers, TypeScript, or Infrastructure-as-Code tools is a plus.
