Job Description
Stripe is offering an exciting Software Engineer Internship for students and early-career technology professionals interested in building reliable software that supports businesses around the world. Interns will work as active members of engineering teams and contribute to projects that can directly influence products, users, and business operations. The role provides exposure to large-scale software engineering, financial technology, APIs, payments infrastructure, risk systems, and other areas of Stripe’s technology platform. Interns will receive support from managers and experienced engineers while taking ownership of meaningful technical problems from development through delivery. The opportunity is particularly suitable for candidates with strong computer science fundamentals, programming experience through coursework or personal projects, and a genuine curiosity about solving challenging engineering problems.
During the internship, candidates will contribute to production-quality software and participate in technical discussions, design activities, code reviews, and collaborative problem solving. Stripe works across several programming languages, including Ruby, Java, JavaScript, Go, and Scala, and candidates are not expected to know every language before joining. Strong programming fundamentals and the ability to learn unfamiliar technologies are considered more important. Interns may work across frontend, backend, infrastructure, or other engineering domains depending on their assigned team. They will learn how to navigate existing codebases, understand unfamiliar systems, write maintainable code, create appropriate test coverage, and incorporate feedback from engineers and stakeholders. Candidates will also be encouraged to use modern AI development tools while applying careful technical judgment to review and validate AI-assisted outputs.
This internship provides valuable practical experience in software engineering, distributed systems, financial technology, API development, production software, testing, code review, and large-scale engineering practices. Stripe seeks ambitious builders who enjoy tackling problems where there may not be an obvious solution and rigorous thinkers who can work through technically complex challenges. Strong written communication, adaptability, curiosity, teamwork, and a willingness to learn are important characteristics for the position. Interns will have opportunities to collaborate with experienced engineers and cross-functional stakeholders while developing an understanding of how technology supports global commerce. For students pursuing computer science, mathematics, or related disciplines, this role can provide a strong foundation for a future career in software engineering and technology.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Participate as a full member of the assigned engineering team, contributing to technical discussions, project decisions, planning activities, and software design conversations.
- Develop production-quality software that addresses meaningful technical or business problems and contributes directly to products used by Stripe customers.
- Take ownership of assigned engineering problems from understanding requirements through implementation, testing, feedback, and completion with support from experienced teammates.
- Participate in code reviews and design discussions, giving constructive technical feedback while actively incorporating suggestions from mentors, peers, and other stakeholders.
- Collaborate with engineers and cross-functional partners to understand requirements, clarify technical challenges, and develop effective solutions.
- Learn unfamiliar systems and codebases by conducting independent research, asking focused questions, and working with experienced engineers or subject matter experts.
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code while following the engineering standards and development practices established by the assigned team.
- Contribute to projects across areas such as frontend, backend, infrastructure, APIs, payments, fraud prevention, data systems, or other technology domains, depending on team requirements.
- Communicate project progress clearly to managers and teammates, highlighting completed work, current challenges, dependencies, and potential risks.
- Use modern AI-powered development tools to accelerate software development while carefully reviewing, testing, refining, and validating AI-generated suggestions and outputs.
- Build strong technical knowledge by learning new programming languages, frameworks, development tools, architectural patterns, and engineering practices throughout the internship.
- Respond constructively to feedback and continuously improve implementation quality, testing practices, technical communication, and overall engineering effectiveness.

What We Are Looking For
The ideal Software Engineer Intern should be an ambitious builder and rigorous problem solver who enjoys learning how complex software systems work. Stripe is looking for candidates who are comfortable approaching unfamiliar problems, asking thoughtful questions, researching independently, and experimenting with potential solutions. A candidate does not need to know every programming language or technology used by the organization. Strong computer science fundamentals, programming experience, logical reasoning, and the ability to learn quickly are more important. Academic projects, personal applications, previous internships, collaborative university projects, or open-source contributions can demonstrate the practical engineering ability expected for this role.
Successful candidates should also be comfortable receiving feedback and working closely with experienced engineers. The internship involves production software, so attention to quality, testing, maintainability, communication, and technical judgment is important. Candidates should understand that AI coding tools can accelerate development but still require careful human review and validation. Curiosity about payments, financial infrastructure, APIs, distributed systems, fraud prevention, software reliability, and modern engineering practices can be especially valuable. This opportunity is best suited to students who want hands-on experience solving meaningful engineering problems while learning from a technically rigorous and collaborative software development environment.
