Job Description
Amazon is hiring Software Development Engineer (SDE I) Interns for a six-month, full-time internship program designed for students graduating in 2027. This opportunity allows aspiring software engineers to work on real-world technology projects while collaborating with experienced Amazon Software Development Engineers, managers, and technical mentors. Interns will be involved in solving challenging engineering problems across areas such as distributed systems, data mining, automation, optimization, scalability, security, and cloud computing. Rather than working only on academic or simulated assignments, interns get the opportunity to write production-oriented software and contribute to projects that can directly influence Amazon customers and business operations. The internship is designed to provide practical exposure to large-scale software development and help students understand how modern technology products are designed, built, tested, and improved.
During the internship, candidates may work on distributed computing systems, scalable storage platforms, indexing and query technologies, prediction systems, automation solutions, and high-performance services. Interns will learn how to translate broadly defined technical problems into practical software solutions while applying computer science fundamentals such as data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, operating systems, and complexity analysis. The role also provides exposure to Amazon Web Services (AWS), large-scale distributed architectures, relational databases, and modern software development practices. Working within an Agile environment, interns will collaborate with cross-functional teams, participate in technical discussions, write and test code, troubleshoot problems, and continuously improve their solutions based on feedback from experienced engineers.
This Amazon SDE internship is particularly valuable for students who want to build a strong foundation in software engineering, backend development, cloud computing, distributed systems, and scalable application development. Interns are paired with managers and mentors who help guide their technical and professional development throughout the program. Alongside project work, students can interact with other Amazonians, expand their professional network, and participate in intern-focused learning and development activities. The six-month internship requires a full-time commitment of approximately 40 hours per week and is scheduled between January and June 2027. For students graduating in 2027, this opportunity offers practical engineering experience and exposure to the technical challenges involved in building reliable systems at global scale.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Collaborate with experienced software engineers and cross-functional Amazon teams to understand customer needs, evaluate technical challenges, and develop innovative products and services.
- Design, implement, test, and improve software solutions for large-scale computing environments while following established engineering standards and development practices.
- Apply computer science fundamentals such as data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, operating systems, and complexity analysis to solve practical engineering problems.
- Develop software using programming languages such as C, C++, Java, Python, or Perl, depending on the requirements of the assigned team and project.
- Work on distributed computing solutions that are designed to provide scalability, reliability, fault tolerance, performance, and efficient resource utilization.
- Contribute to distributed storage, indexing, and query systems by developing components that can operate reliably across large-scale technology environments.
- Build solutions capable of supporting predictions, automation, data processing, and other computational workloads using scalable distributed systems.
- Analyze broadly defined or ambiguous technical problems, break them into smaller engineering tasks, evaluate possible solutions, and implement appropriate approaches.
- Participate in Agile software development practices including technical discussions, planning, development, testing, code reviews, debugging, and iterative improvement.
- Work closely with managers and technical mentors to understand project expectations, receive feedback, improve engineering practices, and deliver high-quality software throughout the internship.
- Investigate software defects and performance issues, identify potential root causes, and implement improvements that increase reliability, scalability, maintainability, or overall system performance.
- Document technical approaches, communicate engineering challenges clearly, and explain proposed solutions to teammates and stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
Requirements & Eligibility
- Candidates must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related technical field at the time of application.
- Applicants should have an expected graduation year of 2027, making this opportunity particularly relevant to students currently completing their undergraduate or postgraduate technical education.
- Strong understanding of fundamental Computer Science concepts, including object-oriented programming, operating systems, algorithms, data structures, computational complexity, and software engineering principles.
- Knowledge of at least one programming language such as C, C++, Java, Python, or Perl, with the ability to write logical, readable, and testable programs.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to approach unfamiliar technical problems systematically and develop efficient solutions based on available information.
- Understanding of distributed systems, multi-tier applications, relational databases, scalability, fault tolerance, or large-scale software architecture will be beneficial for candidates interested in backend and infrastructure-focused projects.
- Previous technical internships, academic software projects, open-source contributions, competitive programming experience, or significant personal development projects can strengthen a candidate's profile.
- Familiarity with AWS, cloud computing, databases, distributed computing, automation, or scalable backend technologies will be advantageous, although candidates are primarily expected to demonstrate strong engineering fundamentals.
- Candidates should be able to communicate technical challenges and solutions clearly, collaborate with experienced engineers, accept feedback, and contribute effectively within a team environment.
- Ability to work with ambiguous or loosely defined requirements, think abstractly, evaluate multiple approaches, and demonstrate curiosity and willingness to learn new technologies and engineering practices.
- Candidates selected for the internship must be available for a full-time six-month commitment of approximately 40 hours per week and must not have conflicting academic projects, classes, employment, or other internships during the internship period.
Expected Salary
The expected stipend for a Software Development Engineer (SDE I) Intern at Amazon in India can vary depending on location, team, internship cohort, and compensation policies. A realistic market estimate for a six-month software engineering internship at a major technology company such as Amazon can be considered around ₹60,000 to ₹1,20,000 per month, although the actual Amazon internship stipend should be confirmed from the official offer because the provided job posting does not specify a fixed amount.
The internship can provide substantial career value beyond the stipend through hands-on experience with large-scale software engineering, distributed systems, AWS, algorithms, backend technologies, and Amazon's engineering practices. Successful interns may also gain valuable experience for future full-time software engineering opportunities.
