Job Description

L&T is looking for a GenAI Trainee to join its DEIC – L&T Precision Engineering & Systems team in Powai. This opportunity is designed for early-career professionals who have a strong interest in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Generative AI, and Computer Vision and want to gain practical experience developing intelligent technology solutions. The selected candidate will work with experienced AI engineers, data scientists, software developers, product teams, and business stakeholders on projects involving structured and unstructured data, machine learning models, deep learning, Large Language Models, multimodal AI, and image and video analytics. The role provides exposure to the complete AI solution lifecycle, including data preparation, model development, testing, validation, deployment, monitoring, optimization, and documentation.

As a GenAI Trainee, you will contribute to a variety of AI and machine learning initiatives while developing your understanding of modern frameworks and technologies. Your work may involve exploratory data analysis, feature engineering, model training, prompt engineering, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), fine-tuning, computer vision, OCR, object detection, image classification, segmentation, and AI-powered application development. You may also assist with developing APIs, microservices, cloud-based AI solutions, and integrations that bring AI capabilities into enterprise, web, or mobile applications. The role encourages experimentation through Proof-of-Concept projects and innovation initiatives, giving trainees an opportunity to evaluate emerging AI frameworks, tools, and platforms and understand how they can be applied to real-world business challenges.

Roles & Responsibilities

Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence

• Assist with data collection, cleansing, preprocessing, transformation, and validation for structured and unstructured datasets used in AI and machine learning projects.
• Support the design, development, training, testing, and evaluation of machine learning and deep learning models under the guidance of experienced AI professionals.
• Perform feature engineering and participate in model tuning and optimization activities to improve model accuracy, efficiency, and reliability.
• Assist with model validation, benchmarking, performance evaluation, testing, and technical documentation.
• Support the deployment and monitoring of AI/ML models across development and production environments.
• Analyze model performance and help identify potential improvements related to accuracy, latency, scalability, and efficiency.

Generative AI Development

• Assist in developing applications powered by Large Language Models (LLMs) and multimodal AI models for practical enterprise use cases.
• Support prompt engineering and prompt optimization activities and evaluate generated responses for relevance, consistency, accuracy, and usefulness.
• Participate in Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), fine-tuning, model customization, and GenAI experimentation projects.
• Help develop and test AI-powered chatbots, virtual assistants, content-generation applications, and other intelligent solutions.
• Evaluate GenAI outputs for quality, factual accuracy, safety, reliability, and alignment with Responsible AI principles.
• Integrate Generative AI capabilities into enterprise applications using APIs, frameworks, and appropriate software development approaches.

Computer Vision Engineering

• Assist in developing image and video analytics solutions using computer vision and deep learning techniques.
• Support the implementation and evaluation of models for object detection, image classification, image segmentation, object tracking, and OCR.
• Work with image and video datasets for annotation, labeling, augmentation, preprocessing, and quality validation.
• Assist with computer vision development using technologies and frameworks such as OpenCV, TensorFlow, PyTorch, and YOLO.
• Support optimization and deployment of computer vision models for edge devices, cloud platforms, and real-time applications.
• Perform accuracy assessments and quality analysis to evaluate the performance of computer vision systems.

Data Analytics & Engineering

• Conduct Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) to understand datasets, identify patterns, discover anomalies, and generate useful insights.
• Create visualizations, analytical reports, and dashboards to communicate technical and data-driven findings effectively.
• Assist with developing data pipelines and workflows required for AI and machine learning applications.
• Help maintain data quality, integrity, consistency, governance, and appropriate handling practices throughout AI projects.
• Work with different forms of data, including text, images, audio, and video, and assist with their processing and preparation.

AI Solution Development & Integration

• Collaborate with technical teams to develop AI-driven business solutions and intelligent automation applications.
• Integrate AI, Generative AI, and Computer Vision models with web, mobile, and enterprise applications.
• Assist in developing APIs, microservices, and cloud-based AI solutions that allow machine learning capabilities to be integrated into software products.
• Participate in software testing, debugging, troubleshooting, and performance improvement activities.
• Follow coding standards, version-control practices, documentation requirements, and software development best practices.

Research & Innovation

• Stay informed about developments in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Generative AI, Computer Vision, Deep Learning, and multimodal AI.
• Develop Proof-of-Concepts to evaluate emerging AI technologies and demonstrate potential applications across different business use cases.
• Research and evaluate new AI frameworks, libraries, models, tools, and cloud platforms for possible adoption.
• Contribute innovative ideas that can improve AI products, services, operational processes, and automation opportunities.
• Participate in technical discussions, hackathons, innovation programs, and experimentation initiatives.

Documentation & Compliance

• Prepare technical documentation, model documentation, project reports, and supporting engineering materials.
• Document datasets, preprocessing procedures, model training approaches, evaluation results, deployment processes, and relevant technical decisions.
• Follow Responsible AI, cybersecurity, data privacy, ethical AI, and information security guidelines.
• Ensure AI development activities follow applicable organizational, industry, and regulatory standards.

Collaboration & Learning

• Work closely with AI Engineers, Data Scientists, Software Developers, Product Teams, and Business Stakeholders.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies, code reviews, technical meetings, project discussions, and knowledge-sharing activities.
• Continuously strengthen technical skills through formal training, mentoring, self-learning, experimentation, and practical project assignments.
• Demonstrate a proactive approach toward learning new AI technologies and adopting emerging development practices.

Requirements & Eligibility

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Technology/Engineering, with B.Tech or M.Tech being the specified minimum qualification.
• Strong interest in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Generative AI, Deep Learning, or Computer Vision.
• 0–2 years of relevant experience, making the opportunity suitable for fresh graduates and early-career technology professionals.
• Understanding of fundamental machine learning and artificial intelligence concepts.
• Basic knowledge of data preparation, preprocessing, feature engineering, model training, testing, and evaluation.
• Familiarity with structured and unstructured datasets and fundamental data analysis techniques.
• Understanding of computer vision concepts such as image classification, object detection, segmentation, OCR, or image processing is beneficial.
• Awareness of Generative AI concepts, Large Language Models, prompt engineering, RAG, or multimodal AI is an advantage.
• Basic programming knowledge and the ability to understand and work with AI/ML development code.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with an interest in experimenting with technical solutions.
• Ability to work collaboratively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Good documentation and communication skills.
• Willingness to continuously learn new AI frameworks, tools, models, platforms, and development techniques.

Preferred Skills – Good to Have

• Python programming for AI, machine learning, data analysis, or application development.
• Experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch, OpenCV, or YOLO.
• Knowledge of Large Language Models and Generative AI application development.
• Exposure to prompt engineering, RAG, embeddings, vector databases, or LLM APIs.
• Familiarity with multimodal AI models.

Expected Salary

For a GenAI Trainee / AI-ML entry-level role in Mumbai, a reasonable market estimate is approximately ₹4 lakh to ₹8 lakh per annum, depending on educational background, programming ability, AI/ML project experience, and practical knowledge of modern AI technologies. Candidates with strong hands-on experience in Python, LLMs, RAG, computer vision, or deep learning may be positioned toward the higher end of the range. The actual compensation offered by L&T may vary according to internal salary structures, candidate profile, role level, and applicable benefits.
