Barclays: Performance Engineer

Job Description

As a Performance Engineer at Barclays, you will be a key part of the Global Payment Services technology team, ensuring that mission-critical banking systems run with exceptional speed, stability, and scalability. Working in a high-volume, low-latency environment where every millisecond matters, you will design and execute performance test strategies that validate application behaviour under real-world workloads. You’ll work with tools like LoadRunner, JMeter, AppDynamics, and ELK to simulate traffic, stress systems, analyse performance trends, and identify potential bottlenecks before they impact millions of customers. This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy deep technical analysis, tuning complex distributed systems, and improving end-to-end performance of APIs and microservices.

Beyond pure performance testing, you’ll contribute to the evolution of Barclays’ digital landscape by partnering closely with developers, architects, SREs, and product stakeholders. You will participate in non-functional requirements (NFR) gathering, workload modelling, scripting strategy, and performance tuning across Java/Spring Boot applications running on cloud platforms such as AWS or BCP. Your insights will directly influence design decisions, scalability strategies, and capacity planning, ensuring that services remain resilient during peak loads, market events, and large-scale releases. In parallel, you’ll help strengthen risk controls, embed best practices in CI/CD pipelines, and support a culture of technical excellence across the broader engineering organisation.

Roles & Responsibilities

1. Design, develop, and implement comprehensive performance test plans and strategies, covering load, stress, endurance, and scalability scenarios for critical payment and digital services.

2. Create, parameterize, and maintain performance scripts using tools such as LoadRunner and JMeter, ensuring reusable, modular, and maintainable test assets.

3. Collaborate with architects and product teams to gather non-functional requirements, perform workload modelling, and define realistic performance benchmarks and SLAs.

4. Execute performance test cycles, monitor system behaviour in real time, and analyse metrics from APM tools like AppDynamics, Wily Introscope, Ganglia, and ELK.

5. Identify bottlenecks across application, database, and infrastructure layers, performing root-cause analysis and recommending tuning actions for APIs, microservices, and databases.

6. Work with Java/Spring Boot engineering teams to optimise JVM settings, connection pools, thread usage, and garbage collection to improve throughput and latency.

7. Contribute to CI/CD integration by automating performance test execution within Jenkins or GitLab pipelines, enabling early detection of regressions.

8. Document findings in clear, data-backed performance reports, highlighting risks, capacity estimates, and optimisation recommendations for stakeholders.

9. Partner with cross-functional teams and business areas to understand upcoming changes, assess performance impact, and support release readiness decisions.

10. Participate in code reviews, knowledge-sharing sessions, and internal tech communities to promote performance engineering best practices.

11. Take ownership of risk management and control strengthening related to performance, ensuring adherence to Barclays’ standards, regulations, and governance frameworks.

12. Act as a point of contact for performance-related queries, guiding peers and influencing decisions in your area of expertise.

Requirements & Eligibility

1. Solid hands-on experience in performance testing and performance engineering, particularly for large-scale, transaction-heavy enterprise applications.

2. Proficiency with performance testing tools such as LoadRunner and JMeter, including scripting, correlation, parameterisation, test execution, and result analysis.

3. Strong understanding of core performance concepts, including NFR gathering, workload modelling, capacity planning, and performance test strategy definition.

4. Experience working with APM and monitoring tools like AppDynamics, Wily Introscope, Ganglia, or similar platforms to analyse application and infrastructure behaviour.

5. Knowledge of Java/J2EE and Spring Boot microservice architectures, with foundational understanding of JVM internals, garbage collection, threading, and connection pooling.

6. Experience in performance testing and tuning APIs and microservices, ideally deployed on cloud platforms such as AWS or Barclays Cloud Platform (BCP).

7. Good SQL scripting skills and familiarity with database performance monitoring, query optimisation, and connection management.

8. Exposure to CI/CD tools such as Jenkins or GitLab, and the ability to integrate performance tests into automated delivery pipelines.

9. Familiarity with ELK or similar log analytics stacks to identify performance trends, errors, and anomalies across distributed systems.

10. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex performance findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

11. Prior experience in financial services, previous Barclays experience, or knowledge of payment systems is a strong plus.
