Job Description

As an Automation Tester (AVP) within Barclays’ Corporate Digital Banking division, you will serve as a key technical leader responsible for designing, developing, and executing end-to-end automated testing solutions for high-performance digital banking applications. This role places you at the intersection of automation engineering, DevOps integration, and quality governanceβ€”ensuring that digital trading and payment platforms deliver exceptional reliability and customer experience. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to enhance automation strategies, strengthen continuous testing practices, and introduce modern frameworks that support real-time financial transactions at scale. Your decisions will directly influence testing standards, release quality, and platform stability across the organization.

Beyond day-to-day automation responsibilities, you will contribute to strategic discussions, coach QA teams, and lead complex testing initiatives within an agile environment. This includes mentoring junior testers, overseeing automation pipelines, and collaborating with architects, developers, and product managers to refine acceptance criteria and optimize technical design. You will also work with event-driven systems such as Kafka, cloud-native platforms like OpenShift, and enterprise-grade CI/CD tools. As an AVP, your role extends into risk management, quality governance, and ensuring compliance with Barclays’ values, engineering principles, and security standards.

Roles & Responsibilities

  1. Lead the design, development, and maintenance of robust automation frameworks using Java, Selenium, Cucumber (BDD), and API testing tools.

  2. Oversee end-to-end testing across system, integration, UAT, and non-functional phases to ensure high-quality delivery of digital banking solutions.

  3. Automate REST/SOAP API validations, microservices workflows, and OpenShift-based deployments for cloud-native applications.

  4. Collaborate with developers, scrum teams, and product owners to refine requirements, define acceptance criteria, and identify automation opportunities.

  5. Conduct root-cause analysis for complex defects, propose corrective actions, and influence resolution strategies across engineering teams.

  6. Integrate automation suites into CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, Git, GitLab, or equivalent tools for continuous and early validation.

  7. Work with Kafka or similar event-streaming systems to validate message flows, consumer behaviour, and data consistency.

  8. Review automation code, enforce quality standards, and promote best practices across test and development teams.

  9. Prepare high-quality documentation and test reports for leadership, highlighting risks, coverage metrics, and overall readiness.

  10. Contribute to testing strategies for security, reliability, performance, and user experience improvements.

  11. Guide teams on risk mitigation, test prioritization, and governance requirements aligned with Barclays’ compliance framework.

  12. As an AVP, mentor and influence team members, lead collaborative efforts across functions, and support decision-making for critical engineering initiatives.

Requirements & Eligibility

  1. Strong experience in software testing with hands-on expertise across all testing phasesβ€”system, integration, UAT, and non-functional.

  2. Proven track record building automation using Java, Selenium, Cucumber (BDD), TestNG/JUnit, API automation frameworks, and STLC methodologies.

  3. Working knowledge of OpenShift environments, containerized testing setups, and cloud-native application behaviour.

  4. Experience in financial services, payments, or corporate banking domains with an understanding of business flows and regulatory expectations.

  5. Proficiency in CI/CD tooling such as Jenkins, Git, GitLab, with the ability to maintain and enhance automated pipelines.

  6. Exposure to Kafka or other event-driven streaming technologies and understanding of event-stream testing patterns.

  7. Familiarity with agile methodologies, Jira, Xray, Confluence, and modern test management practices.

  8. Excellent communication, leadership capability, and the ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  9. Strong analytical skills with the ability to drive resolution for complex issues and provide insights for process improvement.

  10. Ability to influence decision-making, participate in policy development, and contribute to governance and quality-control initiatives at an AVP level.
