Job Description

Nokia is hiring a SW QA Engineer 2 in Bangalore to contribute to the quality engineering and qualification of next-generation optical networking solutions. The role is focused on designing, implementing, and executing comprehensive testing strategies for Optical DWDM equipment, OTN, Ethernet, and network interfaces used across modern telecommunications systems. The selected candidate will work across both manual and automated testing activities, translating product requirements into effective test plans and validating system behavior across different network layers. The position covers Layer 0 DWDM and Layer 1 OTN/Ethernet technologies for Long Haul, Data Center Interconnect (DCI), and Metro optical systems. This makes the opportunity particularly relevant for experienced QA professionals with backgrounds in embedded systems, telecom testing, networking, optical networks, and test automation.

The SW QA Engineer 2 will also contribute to protocol-based testing and automation across important network management and control interfaces, including CLI, NETCONF, RESTCONF, and gRPC. A major part of the role involves developing automated test scenarios using Python or similar programming languages, enabling repeatable and scalable validation of complex networking functionality. Engineers will participate throughout the software development lifecycle by understanding requirements, identifying appropriate test scenarios, tracking defects, and working closely with development and cross-functional teams to prioritize testing based on customer requirements. The role also provides exposure to modern software architectures, including microservices and containerized applications, as Nokia continues to evolve its networking platforms. Continuous integration and continuous testing practices are central to improving release quality and accelerating product delivery.

This opportunity is suited to professionals who want to build their careers in telecommunications software testing, network automation, embedded system QA, optical networking, and quality engineering. The engineer will take ownership of product qualification deliverables and contribute to ensuring that Nokia's networking products meet expected levels of reliability, functionality, security, and performance before reaching customers. Strong Python automation capabilities combined with hands-on experience testing optical network elements will be particularly valuable. Nokia's global R&D environment also provides opportunities to work with advanced networking technologies and collaborate with engineers across different technical disciplines. The position is based at Prestige Solitaire, Brunton Road, Bangalore, and follows a hybrid working model. The role is classified as an experienced, full-time individual contributor position within Nokia's Applied R&D organization.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Develop Test Strategies: Contribute to comprehensive test plans covering Layer 0 DWDM and Layer 1 OTN/Ethernet functionality across Long Haul, Data Center Interconnect, and Metro optical networking systems.
  • Execute Protocol Testing: Design and execute protocol-based test scenarios for optical networking features, including FCAPS, network management interfaces, system security, and other critical L0/L1 functionality.
  • Automate Test Scenarios: Develop and maintain scalable automated test cases using Python or similar programming languages, reducing repetitive manual execution and improving test coverage.
  • Validate NBI Interfaces: Test and validate northbound interfaces such as CLI, NETCONF, RESTCONF, and gRPC within embedded network element environments to ensure reliable communication and management.
  • Analyze Requirements: Participate in the software development lifecycle by reviewing product requirements, identifying quality risks, and converting functional specifications into detailed and effective test scenarios.
  • Perform Manual Testing: Execute manual test cases where required to validate new features, system behavior, integrations, edge cases, and scenarios that may not yet be covered by automation.
  • Drive Continuous Testing: Support continuous testing and integration practices by ensuring automated test suites can be executed consistently and provide reliable feedback during the development and release process.
  • Evaluate Modern Architectures: Participate in testing next-generation operating systems and applications built around microservices, containers, and modern software architectures.
  • Track & Resolve Defects: Identify, document, prioritize, and track software defects using appropriate test and configuration management tools while collaborating with developers to verify fixes.
  • Prioritize Customer Scenarios: Work with product, development, and cross-functional teams to understand customer requirements and prioritize test coverage around critical business and technical scenarios.
  • Own Qualification Deliverables: Take accountability for assigned product qualification activities, ensuring that testing is completed thoroughly and results are documented before release milestones.
  • Improve Quality Processes: Identify opportunities to strengthen testing methodologies, automation frameworks, coverage, execution efficiency, and overall product quality through continuous improvement.

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Educational Qualification: Candidates should hold a Bachelor's degree or higher in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), Computer Science, Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), or a closely related technical discipline, supported by strong academic performance.
  • Relevant Experience: A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in embedded optical network element system testing is required. Experience should ideally cover technologies such as OTN, Ethernet, GMPLS, and DWDM.
  • Optical Networking Knowledge: Strong hands-on understanding of DWDM, OTN, Ethernet, Long Haul, DCI, and Metro optical systems is important for effectively designing and executing Layer 0 and Layer 1 test scenarios.
  • Network Interface Testing: Practical experience working with CLI, NETCONF, RESTCONF, and gRPC in embedded system or networking environments is a key requirement for the position.
  • Python Programming: Strong programming skills in Python or a comparable programming language are required for developing, maintaining, and improving automated testing frameworks and reusable test scenarios.
  • Test Planning & Execution: Candidates should have solid experience creating test plans, designing test cases, executing validation activities, analyzing results, and maintaining adequate test coverage throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Defect & Configuration Management: Familiarity with standard test management, configuration management, and defect tracking practices is required. Experience using tools such as JIRA, Confluence, and Git is an added advantage.
  • Networking Fundamentals: Knowledge of system control-plane concepts and Layer 2/Layer 3 networking is beneficial, particularly for candidates working with complex optical networking products and network management systems.
  • Modern Software Architecture: Exposure to testing microservices, containerized applications, operating systems, or distributed software architectures will strengthen a candidate's profile and support the requirements of next-generation networking platforms.
  • Communication & Ownership: Strong analytical thinking, communication, collaboration, attention to detail, and an accountable approach to work are essential. The ideal candidate should be proactive, self-driven, and comfortable taking ownership of product qualification activities.
