Job Description

The Intern for Automation SRE role at IBM is a hands-on opportunity for aspiring engineers to gain real-world experience in Site Reliability Engineering within a large-scale cloud and infrastructure environment. This position focuses on automation, reliability, and resiliency, enabling interns to work on production-grade systems that support IBM PowerVS Cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service. The role is designed to help build a strong foundation in infrastructure engineering while contributing directly to business-critical systems used by enterprise clients.

In this role, interns will actively participate in designing, developing, testing, and maintaining automation solutions that reduce manual effort and improve system reliability. You will work with modern scripting languages, configuration management tools, and cloud-native technologies to support data center operations, monitoring, backups, and system administration. The work directly impacts the stability, security, and scalability of IBM’s cloud offerings, making it a valuable learning experience for those interested in DevOps and SRE careers.

This internship offers exposure to IBM’s engineering culture, where innovation, ownership, and continuous learning are strongly encouraged. Interns collaborate with experienced SREs and automation engineers, gaining insight into enterprise infrastructure, DevOps practices, and cloud operations. It is an ideal role for students or early-career professionals who enjoy problem-solving, automation, and working with complex systems at scale.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Develop, test, deploy, and maintain automation code for operational procedures and runbooks supporting PowerVS data center build and support activities.

  • Create automation for data collection, log processing, infrastructure monitoring, and backup or restore of critical configuration and system data.

  • Reduce manual operational toil by designing automated solutions using Python, shell scripting, Ansible, and similar automation tools.

  • Build automation workflows to perform infrastructure code stack updates, including firmware, virtualization layers, and cloud management systems.

  • Develop scripts and automation to manage stock images used across PowerVS cloud environments efficiently and securely.

  • Implement automation for remote administration of AIX and Linux servers, including user management and credential handling.

  • Support monitoring and alerting systems to improve observability and reliability across infrastructure components.

  • Collaborate with senior SREs and engineers to troubleshoot issues, improve processes, and enhance system resiliency.

  • Follow best practices for code quality, documentation, testing, and version control in all automation solutions.

  • Continuously identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency through scripting, tooling, and automation-driven approaches.

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related technical field.

  • Strong scripting or coding experience with Python, shell scripting (bash), Ansible, or similar automation tools.

  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of AIX and Linux system administration, including commands, networking, and file systems.

  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Kubernetes or Red Hat OpenShift.

  • Understanding of DevOps concepts, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform.

  • Exposure to cloud platforms, preferably IBM Cloud CLI, APIs, or cloud automation frameworks.

  • Knowledge of monitoring and logging tools such as Nagios or ELK stack is an added advantage.

  • Strong problem-solving skills with an automation-first mindset to minimize repetitive manual tasks.

  • Good communication skills to collaborate effectively with team members and document technical solutions clearly.

Expected Salary

For an Automation SRE Internship at IBM in Bangalore, the expected stipend typically ranges between ₹25,000 to ₹40,000 per month, depending on academic background, skill level, and internship duration. In addition to monetary compensation, interns gain valuable exposure to enterprise infrastructure, mentorship from experienced engineers, and hands-on experience with industry-standard tools and technologies.
